Wei Heng

Wei Heng (韋蘅, active 3rd century CE) was a calligrapher of the Wei dynasty in ancient China. He is primarily known for his contributions to theoretical treatises on calligraphy, particularly his work focusing on the transition from earlier script styles to the emerging kaishu (regular script). While few, if any, authenticated examples of his actual calligraphy survive, his writings are considered important for understanding the evolution of calligraphy during this period. He is often cited in later calligraphy manuals and discussions as a key figure in the development of calligraphic theory and practice. His insights into brushstrokes, structure, and the overall aesthetic principles of Chinese writing helped to solidify the foundations of classical calligraphy. Information about his personal life is sparse.
