Waheguru

Waheguru is a central term in Sikhism, often used as the primary name for God. It is a compound word derived from the Punjabi language, generally understood as:

  • Wah: An exclamation of wonder, awe, and praise. It signifies "wonderful," "amazing," or "praiseworthy."

  • Guru: Refers to the spiritual teacher or guide that dispels darkness and ignorance. It can also refer to the divine wisdom or knowledge itself.

Therefore, "Waheguru" can be interpreted as "Wonderful Teacher," "Wonderful Lord," or "Wonderful Light-Giver." It expresses the inexpressible wonder and awe experienced when contemplating the divine.

The term is used extensively in Sikh scripture (Guru Granth Sahib) and in daily Sikh prayers and practices. Chanting or repeating "Waheguru" (Waheguru Simran) is a common practice for meditation and remembrance of God. The Sikh greeting, "Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh" ("The Khalsa belongs to Waheguru, Victory belongs to Waheguru"), further emphasizes the importance of Waheguru in Sikh identity and belief.

The concept of Waheguru transcends any single attribute or form and is considered to be beyond human comprehension, yet accessible through devotion and grace. While other names and attributes of God are acknowledged in Sikhism, Waheguru is often considered the most profound and complete expression of the divine.
