WFNX (FM)
WFNX (FM) was a Boston-area alternative rock radio station broadcasting at 101.7 MHz. It was a pioneering force in the alternative rock format, launching in 1983 and becoming one of the most influential alternative stations in the United States.
WFNX was known for its eclectic playlist, featuring a mix of established alternative artists, up-and-coming bands, and local Boston acts. The station played a significant role in breaking artists like Nirvana, Pixies, The Cure, and R.E.M. to a wider audience.
Throughout its history, WFNX featured a number of well-known personalities, including Kurt St. Thomas, Jo Barrett, and Oedipus. The station cultivated a strong relationship with its listeners through on-air contests, live events, and a general focus on the Boston music scene.
In 2012, WFNX was sold to Clear Channel Communications (now iHeartMedia), and the alternative rock format was discontinued. The 101.7 FM frequency was rebranded as "Evolution 101.7," a dance/electronic music station. The WFNX call letters were later moved to a different station, and the original station's legacy is now primarily remembered by longtime listeners and those interested in the history of alternative rock radio.
