WARI (Alabama)
WARI, short for the Water Resources Research Institute at Auburn University, is the designated water resources research institute for the state of Alabama. Established under the Water Resources Research Act of 1964, WARI conducts and supports research, education, and outreach programs focused on water-related issues critical to the state and the nation.
WARI's mission includes promoting the sustainable use and management of Alabama's water resources. The institute works to address challenges such as water quality, water quantity, drought, flooding, and aquatic ecosystem health. Key areas of focus include, but are not limited to:
-
Water Quality: Researching and developing strategies to improve and protect water quality in Alabama's rivers, lakes, and aquifers, addressing issues such as pollution from agricultural runoff, industrial discharge, and urban stormwater.
-
Water Quantity: Assessing and managing water resources to ensure adequate supplies for various uses, including agriculture, industry, and municipal needs, particularly during periods of drought.
-
Aquatic Ecosystems: Studying and protecting the biodiversity and ecological health of Alabama's aquatic ecosystems, addressing issues such as invasive species, habitat degradation, and climate change impacts.
-
Water Policy and Management: Providing scientific information and expertise to inform water policy decisions and improve water resource management practices at the state and local levels.
WARI collaborates with a wide range of partners, including universities, government agencies, industries, and non-profit organizations, to conduct research and disseminate findings to stakeholders. It also plays a key role in training future water resource professionals through graduate student support and educational programs. WARI's research findings are disseminated through publications, presentations, workshops, and online resources, making them available to the public and policymakers.
