USS Bonefish (SS-582)
The USS Bonefish (SS-582) was a Skate-class submarine of the United States Navy. She was the second ship of the U.S. Navy to be named for the bonefish.
The Bonefish was commissioned in 1959. Throughout her career, she operated primarily in the Atlantic Ocean, participating in various exercises and patrols, and contributing to anti-submarine warfare training.
In April 1988, while participating in an exercise in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, a fire broke out aboard the Bonefish. Despite the efforts of the crew to contain the blaze, it spread rapidly. The submarine was forced to surface. Although a number of crew members were injured, she managed to reach port with assistance.
The fire damage was severe, and it was determined that the Bonefish was beyond economical repair. She was decommissioned in September 1988 and subsequently stricken from the Naval Vessel Register. Her hulk was later scrapped.
