Vera Rich

Vera Rich (1936-2009) was a British poet, translator, and writer, best known for her translations of Belarusian and Ukrainian literature into English. Born in London, she was a largely self-taught polyglot, eventually mastering approximately fifteen languages. Her linguistic skills and deep interest in Slavic cultures led her to focus on translating works often overlooked in the West, providing a crucial link between these literatures and English-speaking audiences.

Rich's most significant contribution was likely her extensive work translating the poetry of Yanka Kupala, a key figure in Belarusian literature. She also translated the works of Taras Shevchenko, a foundational poet of Ukrainian literature, and Lesya Ukrainka, another important Ukrainian writer.
