VL Pyry

The VL Pyry (also known as Valmet Pyry) was a Finnish two-seat, low-wing fighter-trainer aircraft designed and built by Valtion Lentokonetehdas (VL), the State Aircraft Factory. It served with the Finnish Air Force from the late 1930s until the early 1960s. The aircraft was designed as an advanced trainer, intended to bridge the gap between basic trainers and frontline fighter aircraft.

The Pyry was developed in response to a Finnish Air Force requirement for a modern trainer. The design prioritized ease of handling and maintenance, as well as the ability to simulate the flight characteristics of contemporary fighter aircraft. The aircraft was constructed primarily of wood, reflecting the availability of materials and established manufacturing techniques in Finland at the time.

Key features of the VL Pyry included its low-wing monoplane configuration, tandem seating for instructor and student, and a relatively powerful (for the period) radial engine. It was equipped with basic armament, allowing for gunnery training.

The VL Pyry played a significant role in training Finnish fighter pilots during World War II and in the post-war period. Its robust construction and reliable performance contributed to its long service life. While primarily a trainer, some Pyry aircraft were also used in reconnaissance roles during the Winter War and Continuation War. After its retirement from military service, a number of VL Pyry aircraft were sold to private owners and preserved as historical aircraft.
