Usuthu
Usuthu is a historical battle cry and royal salute of the Zulu people of South Africa. It is derived from the name of King Dingane kaSenzangakhona's royal residence, uMgungundlovu (also sometimes referred to as "Usuthu" after the western side of the settlement).
The term "Usuthu" also became associated with the faction loyal to Cetshwayo kaMpande, a later Zulu king, during the Zulu civil war in the 1880s. This faction opposed the Mandlakazi led by Zibhebhu kaMaphitha, another prominent Zulu chief. The division arose from succession disputes and differing views on how to interact with the British colonial administration.
Therefore, "Usuthu" carries multiple layers of meaning: a reference to Zulu royalty and tradition, a rallying cry for Zulu unity and strength, and a historical association with a specific faction during a period of internal conflict. It remains a significant term in Zulu history and culture.
