The Muppets (TV series)
The Muppets is an American mockumentary television series that aired on ABC from September 22, 2015, to March 1, 2016. The series, created by Bill Prady and Bob Kushell, attempted to present a more adult and contemporary take on the Muppets, showcasing their personal lives and workplace relationships behind the scenes of a fictional late-night talk show hosted by Miss Piggy, titled Up Late with Miss Piggy.
The show employed a single-camera, mockumentary style, similar to The Office or Modern Family, with characters frequently breaking the fourth wall to address the camera crew. The initial episodes focused on Kermit the Frog navigating his breakup with Miss Piggy and managing the chaotic personalities of the other Muppets as the executive producer of Up Late.
The Muppets featured the core Muppet characters, including Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Animal, and Scooter, as well as recurring and guest star appearances from other Muppets and human celebrities. The series aimed to explore themes of relationships, ambition, and the challenges of working in show business.
Despite initial high ratings and significant media attention, The Muppets faced criticism for its tone and portrayal of the characters, with some viewers finding the more adult storylines and cynical humor inconsistent with the traditional Muppet brand. After a mid-season hiatus, the series underwent creative changes, including a change in showrunner, shifting towards a more lighthearted and family-friendly approach. However, these changes were not enough to significantly improve ratings, and the series was ultimately canceled after one season.
