USS Thatcher (DD-162)

The USS Thatcher (DD-162) was a Wickes-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War I and World War II. Named for Rear Admiral Henry Knox Thatcher, she was commissioned in 1919 and served primarily in the Atlantic during her early years.

During World War II, Thatcher served in the Pacific Theater. She participated in numerous operations, including convoy escort duty and screening for larger warships. Thatcher played a role in the Guadalcanal Campaign, providing fire support for Marines ashore and engaging in naval combat against Japanese forces.

Thatcher was heavily damaged in the Battle of the Komandorski Islands in March 1943. Although badly damaged, she managed to return to port for repairs. Following repairs, she continued to serve in the Pacific, participating in operations in the Aleutian Islands and later supporting the landings in the Philippines.

Decommissioned after the war, USS Thatcher was eventually scrapped. She received several battle stars for her service during World War II.
