USS N-1

The USS N-1 (SS-53) was the lead ship of the N-class submarines built for the United States Navy during World War I. She was originally named Seawolf but was renamed N-1 on November 17, 1911, to free up the name for a new G-class submarine.

The N-class submarines were designed by the Electric Boat Company and represented an early attempt by the U.S. Navy to develop more advanced submarine technology. These submarines were relatively small and primarily intended for coastal defense.

USS N-1 was commissioned on November 15, 1917, and served primarily in training and experimental roles during World War I. She did not see any combat action. After the war, she continued in service, primarily used for testing and development.

USS N-1 was decommissioned on April 30, 1926, and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on the same day. She was subsequently sold for scrap. Although not a frontline warship, USS N-1 played a role in the development of U.S. submarine technology and training future submariners.
