USS Butte
The USS Butte (AE-27) was a Kilauea-class ammunition ship of the United States Navy. She was named after Butte County, California.
Butte (AE-27) was laid down on 30 September 1966 at the Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi, launched on 24 February 1968, and commissioned on 15 November 1968.
As an ammunition ship, USS Butte's primary role was to replenish the stores of ammunition and missiles carried by combatant ships at sea, allowing those ships to remain on station for extended periods. This capability was crucial for maintaining a forward presence and supporting naval operations globally.
During her years of service, USS Butte participated in numerous deployments and exercises, providing essential support to the fleet. She served extensively in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and operated in support of various operations throughout her career.
USS Butte was decommissioned on 30 September 1994 and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 18 January 1999. She was subsequently disposed of through the Security Assistance Program. While her hull no longer sails, the USS Butte (AE-27) remains a part of the US Navy's history as a vital logistics asset during the Cold War and beyond.
