Tridevi

The Tridevi (Sanskrit: त्रिदेवी, IAST: tridevī) is a concept in Hinduism that postulates a triad of three supreme goddesses. These goddesses are typically identified as Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati. They are the consorts of the Hindu trinity (Trimurti) of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, respectively.

  • Saraswati: The goddess of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. She is often depicted holding a veena (a stringed instrument), a book, and a rosary.

  • Lakshmi: The goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and beauty. She is usually depicted sitting or standing on a lotus flower and showering gold coins.

  • Parvati: The goddess of power, love, motherhood, and devotion. She is often depicted with Shiva and is considered the complete incarnation of Adi Shakti, the divine feminine power.

The Tridevi are not always portrayed as a strict hierarchy, but rather as complementary aspects of the divine feminine. They are often invoked together in prayers and rituals seeking holistic well-being, encompassing knowledge, prosperity, and strength. The concept of the Tridevi is particularly prominent in Shaktism, the Hindu tradition focused on the worship of the divine feminine. The goddesses represent dynamic feminine energy and power (Shakti) essential for creation, preservation, and destruction, mirroring the functions of their respective consorts. While often considered consorts, in Shaktism, the Tridevi are viewed as the ultimate source of the Trimurti's power, and in some interpretations, even their origin.
