Toru Goto
Toru Goto (五島 亨, Goto Tōru, born 1934, died 2014) was a Japanese engineer and computer scientist, known for his pioneering work in inkjet printer technology. He is widely regarded as the inventor of drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet printing.
Goto joined Canon in 1959 and dedicated much of his career to researching and developing printing technologies. In the late 1970s, he led the team that created the "bubble jet" technology, a form of thermal inkjet printing. This technology uses heat to vaporize ink, creating a bubble that forces a droplet onto the paper. Goto's innovation significantly improved the speed, quality, and reliability of inkjet printing, revolutionizing the printing industry.
He is credited with numerous patents related to inkjet printing and held key leadership positions within Canon's research and development divisions. His work laid the foundation for the widespread adoption of inkjet printers in homes and offices worldwide. Goto's contributions earned him significant recognition, including induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2019.
