Torales
Torales is an order of fungi within the class Agaricomycetes. This order is relatively small and poorly defined compared to other orders within the Agaricomycetes, and its circumscription has been subject to change based on ongoing phylogenetic research.
Historically, the Torales has been used to classify fungi characterized by a specific type of basidium, or spore-bearing cell. These basidia were often described as having a particular morphology or developmental pattern. However, modern molecular phylogenetics has shown that these morphological characteristics do not necessarily reflect evolutionary relationships.
Currently, the composition of the Torales is uncertain. While some genera were formerly assigned to this order, their placement is being actively revised based on DNA sequence data. Some fungi previously classified in Torales may now be found in other orders within the Agaricomycetes. Precise delimitation of the Torales and its constituent families awaits further study. The concept of Torales persists primarily in older literature and databases, but is less actively employed in contemporary mycological classification without strong phylogenetic support for its monophyly.
