Tilapa

Tilapa is a misspelling of the word Tilapia.

Tilapia refers to a group of nearly one hundred species of cichlid fish from the tilapiine cichlid tribe. These fish are primarily freshwater fish inhabiting shallow streams, ponds, rivers and lakes. Historically native to Africa and the Middle East, tilapia have been introduced to other regions, particularly in aquaculture.

Tilapia are popular for aquaculture because of their rapid growth, tolerance of high stocking densities, and ability to utilize a wide range of food sources. They are also relatively disease resistant. Their mild flavor makes them a popular food fish worldwide.

The most commercially important species of tilapia include Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia), Oreochromis mossambicus (Mozambique tilapia), and Oreochromis aureus (Blue tilapia). These species and their hybrids are widely farmed.

Tilapia are an important source of protein for many people, particularly in developing countries.
