Thomery

Thomery is a commune in the Seine-et-Marne department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France. It is located near the town of Fontainebleau. Thomery is known historically for its production of Chasselas grapes, grown using a unique espalier method against walls. This method, specific to Thomery, allowed the grapes to ripen more fully due to the reflected heat from the walls, extending the growing season and producing a high-quality fruit. The practice was widespread in the 18th and 19th centuries and contributed significantly to the local economy. While the extensive walled vineyards are less prevalent today, Thomery retains its identity as a center for this specialized viticulture and related heritage.
