The Rebel (Chinese TV series)

The Rebel (Chinese: 叛逆者; Pinyin: Pànnìzhě) is a 2021 Chinese historical spy drama television series based on the novel of the same name by Yu Yuan. The series stars Zhu Yilong, Tong Yao, Wang Zhiwen, Wang Yang, and Yao Anlian. It premiered on CCTV-8 and iQiyi on June 7, 2021.

The series is set in 1936 and follows Lin Nansheng, a young man recruited into the Kuomintang (KMT) intelligence organization, where he undergoes rigorous training. Through his experiences and observations, he becomes disillusioned with the corruption and brutality within the KMT. He is gradually influenced by the ideals of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and eventually chooses to join them, becoming a valuable asset in their fight against the KMT and the invading Japanese forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The story revolves around his transformation from a nationalist agent to a dedicated communist spy, highlighting the ideological struggles and sacrifices made during that turbulent period in Chinese history.

The show received generally positive reviews, particularly for its suspenseful plot, compelling characters, and portrayal of the political landscape of the time. The acting performances, especially those of Zhu Yilong and Wang Zhiwen, were also widely praised.
