The Devil and the Smalander (1927 film)

The Devil and the Smalander (original Swedish title: Fänrik Ståls sägner) is a 1927 Swedish silent film directed by John W. Brunius. It is based on Johan Ludvig Runeberg's epic poem The Tales of Ensign Stål (Fänrik Ståls sägner), specifically focusing on the story "The Devil and the Smalander" ("Hin Ondes bröder").

The film is a historical drama set during the Finnish War of 1808-1809, a conflict between Sweden and Russia which resulted in Finland becoming an autonomous Grand Duchy under Russian rule. The plot centers on a group of Finnish soldiers and their interactions with the Devil, who attempts to exploit their hardship and temptation. A Smalander (a person from the Swedish province of Småland) plays a key role in resisting the Devil's influence and demonstrating courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

The film is notable for its large-scale battle scenes, dramatic cinematography, and its portrayal of Finnish national identity. Although a silent film, it utilized intertitles to convey dialogue and narrative exposition. While not one of the most widely known silent films internationally, it is considered an important early Swedish film adaptation of a classic work of literature and a significant representation of Swedish and Finnish history on film.
