Skullduggery (album)
Skullduggery is the sixteenth studio album by the American rock band Steely Dan, released on October 26, 1976, by ABC Records. It was the last studio album the band released before a hiatus that lasted until 2000, when Two Against Nature was released.
The album's title refers to deceptive or dishonest behavior, a theme that is reflected in some of the lyrics and the overall tone of the record. Musically, Skullduggery continues Steely Dan's signature blend of jazz, rock, and pop, characterized by sophisticated harmonies, complex arrangements, and precise musicianship. Notable tracks include "Kid Charlemagne," which chronicles the life of LSD chemist Owsley Stanley, and "Peg," a song that famously featured a number of session guitarists before the band settled on a solo by Jay Graydon.
Skullduggery reached number 25 on the Billboard 200 chart and has since been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). While initially receiving mixed reviews, it has subsequently gained a more favorable reputation and is now considered a significant work in Steely Dan's discography.
