John McDonnell (coach)
John McDonnell (born August 19, 1938) is a retired Irish track and field coach, most notably known for his highly successful tenure at the University of Arkansas. He coached the Arkansas Razorbacks men's track and field and cross country teams from 1972 to 2000, establishing them as a national powerhouse.
During his tenure, McDonnell's teams won 40 national championships, including 12 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, 11 NCAA Cross Country Championships, and 8 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He is considered one of the most successful coaches in the history of collegiate track and field. He also led the Razorbacks to a "Triple Crown" in 1984-85, winning national championships in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track in the same academic year.
McDonnell was known for his ability to recruit and develop talent from around the world. He fostered a team culture that emphasized hard work, discipline, and dedication. He was inducted into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame in 2003. The track at the University of Arkansas's John McDonnell Field is named in his honor. Following his retirement, he remained involved in the sport, often attending meets and providing mentorship to aspiring coaches.
