Telecommunications Tower (Montevideo)
The Telecommunications Tower, also known as the Torre de las Telecomunicaciones or Torre Antel, is a high-rise building located in Montevideo, Uruguay. Completed in 2002, it serves as the headquarters of Uruguay's state-owned telecommunications company, ANTEL (Administración Nacional de Telecomunicaciones). The tower is notable for being the tallest structure in Uruguay, reaching a height of approximately 158 meters (518 feet) including its antenna.
Its design, by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, incorporates elements of modern architecture and reflects the importance of telecommunications in modern society. The building features a predominantly glass facade and a distinctive antenna structure at its peak.
Beyond its functional purpose as an office building and telecommunications hub, the Telecommunications Tower serves as a landmark in Montevideo, contributing significantly to the city's skyline. A panoramic viewing platform is located near the top of the tower, offering visitors extensive views of Montevideo, the Río de la Plata, and surrounding areas. The tower also houses a museum dedicated to the history of telecommunications in Uruguay.
