St. George's Cathedral (Kingston, Ontario)

St. George's Cathedral is the Anglican cathedral for the Diocese of Ontario, located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Often referred to as the "Cathedral of the City," it stands prominently in downtown Kingston.

The building evolved from a simple wooden church constructed in 1792, initially serving the United Empire Loyalists who had settled in the area. Over time, the wooden structure was replaced by a stone church in 1825. This stone church was subsequently elevated to cathedral status in 1862 upon the creation of the Diocese of Ontario.

The current neo-Gothic structure dates primarily from the mid-19th century. Significant renovations and expansions were undertaken, resulting in the grand edifice that exists today. These included a taller spire, transepts, and other architectural enhancements characteristic of the Gothic Revival style.

St. George's Cathedral is noted for its stained glass windows, its Casavant Frères organ, and its historical significance within the Kingston community and the Anglican Church of Canada. It continues to serve as a place of worship, a center for community outreach, and a venue for musical and cultural events. Its architectural design and historical importance have led to its designation as a National Historic Site of Canada.
