TCG Muavenet (DM 357)
TCG Muavenet (DM 357) was a Turkish Navy destroyer. Originally commissioned as USS Gwin (DM-33) in the United States Navy during World War II, it was a Gearing-class destroyer modified for anti-submarine warfare (ASW). Following its service with the US Navy, it was transferred to Turkey in 1971 and renamed TCG Muavenet (DM 357).
The ship is most notably remembered for its accidental destruction during a NATO exercise, Display Determination 1992, in the Aegean Sea. On October 1, 1992, the Muavenet was struck by two Sea Sparrow missiles fired from the USS Saratoga (CV-60), a US Navy aircraft carrier. The incident resulted in the deaths of five Turkish naval officers and significant damage to the Muavenet.
The incident led to considerable strain in US-Turkish relations and sparked controversy regarding the circumstances and safety procedures during the exercise. Subsequent investigations determined the missile firing to be accidental, attributed to human error and procedural failures on the USS Saratoga. The US government offered official apologies and provided financial compensation to the families of the deceased and to the Turkish government. The damaged Muavenet was decommissioned and later scrapped.
