John McCrea (musician)
John McCrea (born December 21, 1965) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician, best known as the lead vocalist and principal songwriter of the alternative rock band Cake.
McCrea formed Cake in Sacramento, California, in 1991. He is known for his distinctive, monotone vocal style, often blending spoken word elements with melodic singing. His lyrics frequently incorporate wry observations, social commentary, and unconventional narratives.
Beyond his role as vocalist, McCrea is a multi-instrumentalist and has contributed guitar, keyboards, and vibraphone to Cake's recordings. He is the primary creative force behind the band's songwriting and musical direction.
McCrea is also noted for his dedication to environmental issues. Cake has consistently promoted eco-friendly practices, such as using recycled materials for album packaging and offering complimentary tree seedlings at concerts. McCrea himself is a vocal advocate for conservation and sustainable living.
