T. Carmi

T. Carmi (also seen as T. Karmi; Hebrew: ט. כרמי), born Chaim Kugelman (December 31, 1925 – November 2, 1994), was an Israeli Hebrew poet, translator, editor, and playwright.

Born in New York City, Carmi immigrated to Palestine in 1947. He served in the Palmach during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Carmi was a significant figure in modern Hebrew poetry, known for his accessible yet profound style. His poems often explored themes of love, loss, time, and the complexities of Israeli identity.

Carmi published numerous collections of poetry, including "Street of the Olive Trees," "Something Human," and "At the Stone of Losses." He also translated works from English into Hebrew, including plays by Shakespeare and poetry by poets such as Sylvia Plath. He taught Hebrew literature at various universities, including Brandeis University and Oxford University.

Carmi received several awards for his work, including the Bialik Prize for Literature and the Newman Prize for Hebrew Literature. His poetry has been translated into numerous languages and continues to be studied and admired for its emotional depth and linguistic precision.
