Sydney Johnson (valet)

Sydney Johnson (c. 1765 – 1842) was a formerly enslaved African man who gained prominence as a valet to James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. Born into slavery at Montpelier, Madison's plantation in Virginia, Johnson became a trusted member of Madison's household staff. He accompanied Madison during his time as Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson and during his two terms as President.

While serving as Madison's valet, Johnson’s duties included attending to Madison's personal needs, managing his wardrobe, and assisting with travel arrangements. He was known for his discretion and loyalty to the Madison family. Accounts suggest that Johnson enjoyed a degree of trust and influence within the household, acting as an intermediary between Madison and other enslaved individuals at Montpelier.

After James Madison's death in 1836, Johnson continued to serve Dolley Madison until her death in 1849. He was eventually freed, although the exact circumstances and date of his manumission are not entirely clear in historical records. Johnson's life offers a glimpse into the complex relationships between enslaved individuals and their masters during the era of slavery in the United States. His story, while often overshadowed by the narrative of the Founding Fathers, contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the individuals who shaped American history, both celebrated and often marginalized.
