Sweet Lavender (1920 film)
Sweet Lavender is a 1920 British silent romantic drama film directed by Cecil Hepworth. It is based on the 1888 play Sweet Lavender by Arthur Wing Pinero. The film stars Alma Taylor, James Carew, and Eileen Moore.
The story centers around Lavender, a young woman who is secretly the ward of Professor Poffles, a benevolent, eccentric barrister. Lavender is in love with Clement Hale, an artist who is believed to be of a lower social class. Various complications arise, including a potential marriage arrangement for Lavender with another suitor and the revelation of Clement's true identity and noble lineage. Ultimately, love prevails, and Lavender and Clement are united.
The film is considered a relatively faithful adaptation of the popular Victorian play. It was one of Hepworth's later films and featured a cast of well-known British actors of the era. While not as widely celebrated as some of Hepworth's earlier work, Sweet Lavender is a notable example of British silent cinema and a reflection of the romantic dramas that were popular on stage and screen during the early 20th century. Information about the film's availability and preservation status is limited; as a silent film, its survival is subject to the preservation efforts of film archives.
