Car (mythology)

Car was a legendary king of Megara in Greek mythology. He was considered autochthonous, meaning he sprang from the soil itself, and was therefore one of the earliest inhabitants of the region.

Accounts vary slightly regarding Car's parentage and descendants. He is most often said to be the son of Phoroneus, the first man in the Argolid. Other accounts identify his father as Chrysorthes, a son of Apollo. Car's mother is usually cited as Cerdo, a daughter of Phoroneus.

Car is credited with establishing the acropolis of Megara, originally named Caria in his honor. He is also said to have constructed a temple to Demeter. According to some traditions, Car's wife was Eurynome, a daughter of Nisus, king of Megara. He had a daughter, Mesa, who married Cryas, and inherited the kingdom of Megara after Nisus' death as he did not have male heirs.

Car's importance lies primarily in his role as a founding figure and eponymous ancestor for the city of Megara. He represents the city's claim to ancient lineage and legitimacy. He is a figure who bridges the mythical past with the historical development of Megara. Although not a major figure in the wider Greek pantheon, his local significance was considerable to the Megarians. His legend contributed to their cultural identity and civic pride.
