Chunee

Chunee (also spelled Chuny or Cheenee) was a famous elephant who lived in early 19th-century London. He was originally brought to England around 1800 and became a popular attraction at the Royal Menagerie, located first in the Strand and later at Exeter Exchange.

Chunee was known for his impressive size and intelligence, and he performed tricks for paying audiences. He became a significant cultural figure, appearing in cartoons and even inspiring theatrical productions.

Tragically, in 1826, Chunee became aggressive and difficult to control, possibly due to a painful tooth or other ailment. After killing his keeper, attempts were made to subdue him. When these failed, he was eventually shot and killed by soldiers. The event caused a public sensation and raised concerns about the welfare of animals kept in captivity.

Chunee's skeleton was preserved and displayed for many years after his death. The incident contributed to changing public attitudes towards animal welfare and the ethics of keeping exotic animals in menageries and zoos. He remains a notable, if unfortunate, figure in the history of animal exhibitions and the early development of animal welfare movements in Britain.
