Chinese-American Composite Wing (Provisional)

The Chinese-American Composite Wing (CACW) (Provisional) was a joint United States Air Force (USAF) and Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) aviation unit that operated during World War II from 1943 to 1945. It was formed as part of a larger effort to assist China in its war against Japan, providing crucial air support, bombing, and reconnaissance capabilities.

The "Provisional" designation reflected the evolving nature of the relationship and organizational structure as the unit was established and refined. The CACW was primarily composed of Chinese airmen and ground crews, augmented by American pilots, navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, and other support personnel. The American personnel were often referred to as "volunteers," although many were formally assigned to the unit.

The CACW operated primarily from airfields in China, engaging in missions against Japanese forces throughout Southeast Asia and China. Its aircraft included P-40 Warhawks, P-51 Mustangs, B-25 Mitchell bombers, and C-47 Skytrain transports. The unit played a significant role in disrupting Japanese supply lines, attacking enemy airfields and bases, and providing air support to Chinese ground troops.

The collaboration between Chinese and American personnel within the CACW fostered a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect, despite cultural and language barriers. The unit's performance in combat contributed significantly to the Allied war effort in the China-Burma-India Theater. After the war, the CACW was disbanded, and its personnel returned to their respective countries. However, the unit's legacy remains as a testament to the successful military cooperation between China and the United States during World War II.
