William Hewett (British Army officer)

William Hewett (1834 – 1888) was a British Army officer and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Military Career:

Hewett was born on 12 June 1834. He joined the British Army, serving primarily with the 62nd Regiment of Foot (later The Wiltshire Regiment). He attained the rank of Captain during his service.

Victoria Cross:

Hewett was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Crimean War. On 6 September 1855, at Sebastopol, Crimea, Captain Hewett led a storming party against the Redan. He himself was wounded, but despite this, he remained at the head of his men until they were driven back. He then returned to bring away as many wounded as he could find, thus saving several lives. His bravery and leadership were noted in the dispatches and resulted in the award of the Victoria Cross.

Later Life:

After the Crimean War, Hewett continued his military service. He eventually retired from the army. He died on 26 July 1888 and is buried in Bath Abbey Cemetery.

William Hewett is remembered for his courage and selfless actions during the Crimean War. His Victoria Cross is a testament to his bravery and leadership.
