Die Völkerfreiheit (Kiev)

Die Völkerfreiheit ("The Freedom of Peoples" or "Peoples' Freedom") was a German-language newspaper published in Kiev (Kyiv), Ukraine, during the German occupation in World War II (specifically, during the Reichskommissariat Ukraine period, roughly 1941-1943). It primarily targeted the ethnic German population (Volksdeutsche) living in and around the Kiev region. The newspaper served as a propaganda tool for the Nazi regime, promoting Nazi ideology, disseminating official announcements and decrees, and fostering pro-German sentiment among its readership. It also included news from the wider war effort and articles designed to instill a sense of belonging and shared identity amongst the Volksdeutsche. While aiming to build solidarity, it also often contained content that denigrated other ethnic groups and reinforced the Nazi racial hierarchy. After the recapture of Kiev by Soviet forces, the newspaper ceased publication. The exact dates of publication may vary slightly depending on the source, but it was a key element of the Nazi propaganda apparatus in occupied Ukraine during the period.
