Sutanuti

Sutanuti was one of the three villages that merged to form the city of Kolkata (Calcutta) in India. The other two villages were Gobindapur and Kalikata. Sutanuti was a riverside village known as a major hub for merchants and traders, particularly in yarn and textiles. Its name, possibly derived from "suta" (thread or yarn) and "nuti" (bundle or package), reflects this trading activity. It was located to the north of the other two villages and was a significant part of the land purchased by the English East India Company in the late 17th century, paving the way for the development of Calcutta as a major colonial city. Historically, it was considered the "native" part of early Calcutta, contrasting with the more European-influenced areas.
