Stimpsonia (plant)

Stimpsonia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Primulaceae. It is a small genus, currently containing two accepted species.

  • Stimpsonia chamaedryoides C. Wright ex A. Gray - native to eastern Asia, specifically Japan, Korea, and eastern China.

  • Stimpsonia veronicifolia (Franch. & Sav.) Makino - also native to eastern Asia, and frequently considered synonymous with Stimpsonia chamaedryoides.

These plants are herbaceous perennials, typically found in moist woodland habitats. They are characterized by their creeping rhizomes, basal rosettes of leaves, and racemes of small, white flowers. The genus is named in honor of William Stimpson, an American zoologist. Their distribution is primarily limited to temperate regions of East Asia. Further research is ongoing regarding the taxonomic distinctiveness of the two recognised species.
