Niketas (son of Artabasdos)

Niketas, son of Artabasdos, was a Byzantine nobleman and briefly a co-emperor during the reign of his father, Artabasdos, from 742 to 743 AD.

Artabasdos, the strategos (military governor) of the Armeniakon theme, usurped the throne from Emperor Constantine V in 742. Niketas was elevated to the position of co-emperor alongside his father and brother, Nikephoros. During their short reign, Artabasdos and his sons reversed the iconoclastic policies of Constantine V and restored the veneration of icons.

Niketas was primarily responsible for securing the region of Thrace for his father's regime. He led troops against Constantine V, but was ultimately defeated in 743. Constantine V, supported by troops from the Anatolikon and Opsikion themes, marched on Constantinople.

Following Constantine V's recapture of Constantinople in late 743, Artabasdos and his sons, including Niketas, were captured, blinded, and exiled. After their fall from power, iconoclasm was reinstated as official state policy. Nothing more is known about Niketas's life after his blinding and exile.
