Urbana (payment card)
The Urbana card is a rechargeable contactless smart card used for fare payment on public transportation systems in Zagreb, Croatia. It is integrated across various modes of transport, including trams, buses, and the Zagreb funicular. The system is operated by Zagrebački električni tramvaj (ZET), the city's public transportation authority.
Users can purchase and recharge Urbana cards at various locations, including ZET ticket offices, newsstands, and other designated points of sale. The card can be loaded with monetary value (electronic purse) or specific ticket types (e.g., daily, monthly passes). When boarding a vehicle, users tap the card on a validator to deduct the fare or activate the appropriate ticket.
There are different versions of the Urbana card, including a paper-based single or multiple-journey ticket equipped with a contactless chip and a plastic rechargeable card. The introduction of the Urbana card aimed to streamline fare collection, reduce queuing times, and improve the overall efficiency of Zagreb's public transportation system. The system supports both anonymous use (for electronic purse) and personalized cards with added benefits such as theft protection.
