Louis Hébert (officer)

Louis Hébert (c. 1764 – 1828) was a French military officer who served in the French colonial forces in Louisiana and West Florida. He played a notable role in the defense of Spanish West Florida against American incursions during the early 19th century.

Hébert was born in present-day Louisiana when it was still under French control. He joined the military and rose through the ranks, serving with distinction. He was known for his leadership abilities and knowledge of the local terrain.

During the period of unrest and border disputes between Spanish West Florida and the United States, Hébert was instrumental in organizing and leading local militia forces to defend Spanish territory. He participated in several skirmishes and engagements against American filibusters and settlers attempting to encroach upon Spanish lands.

His efforts were significant in maintaining Spanish control over the region for a time, although ultimately West Florida was annexed by the United States. Following the annexation, Hébert remained in the area and became a prominent figure in local society. He is remembered for his service to the Spanish crown and his contribution to the history of the region. While details of his later life are scarce, his earlier military contributions are well-documented in historical records related to the West Florida period.
