IZh-56

The IZh-56 was a Soviet-era motorcycle produced by Izhmash (Izhevsk Machinebuilding Plant) from 1956 to 1962. It was a significant model in the history of Soviet motorcycle manufacturing, representing an evolution from earlier IZh models.

The IZh-56 was powered by a single-cylinder, two-stroke engine, typically around 350cc. It featured a pressed steel frame and telescopic front forks, offering improved handling and comfort compared to previous rigid-frame motorcycles. The engine design was relatively simple and robust, making the IZh-56 popular for its reliability and ease of maintenance.

The motorcycle was widely used throughout the Soviet Union for both personal transportation and light commercial purposes. It was known for its affordability and ability to handle the often-challenging road conditions prevalent in many parts of the country. The IZh-56 was eventually succeeded by the IZh-Jupiter series, which incorporated further design improvements and more powerful engines. Although production ceased in the early 1960s, many examples of the IZh-56 remain in existence today, often restored and maintained by enthusiasts.
