Steve Adler (politician)
Steve Adler (born March 23, 1956) is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 52nd Mayor of Austin, Texas, from 2015 to 2023.
Adler graduated from Princeton University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and from the University of Texas School of Law in 1982. Prior to entering politics, Adler was a successful eminent domain lawyer and partner at the law firm Barron & Adler. He also served as chief of staff and general counsel for Texas State Senator Eliot Shapleigh for over a decade.
Adler ran for mayor of Austin in 2014, campaigning on issues such as affordability, transportation, and environmental protection. He won the election in a runoff against City Council Member Mike Martinez.
As mayor, Adler focused on addressing Austin's rapid growth and its accompanying challenges. Key initiatives during his tenure included efforts to improve traffic congestion, expand affordable housing options, and promote environmental sustainability. He also oversaw the city's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adler championed the Project Connect transportation plan, a multibillion-dollar investment in light rail and bus rapid transit.
Adler served two terms as mayor, choosing not to seek reelection in 2022. His term concluded in January 2023. He was succeeded by Kirk Watson.
