St Augustine's College (Kent)
St Augustine's College was an independent, co-educational boarding and day school located in Westgate-on-Sea, Kent, England. Founded in 1884 by the Benedictine Order, the school operated on the site of a former monastery, St Augustine's Abbey. The abbey itself was historically significant, being founded by St Augustine of Canterbury in 597 AD.
The College provided education for students aged 3 to 18, encompassing a pre-preparatory, preparatory, and senior school. Its curriculum aimed to offer a broad and balanced education, preparing students for university entrance. A range of co-curricular activities, including sports, music, drama, and clubs, were also offered.
The Benedictine ethos of the school emphasized values such as community, hospitality, respect, and service.
In 1995 the monks moved out of St Augustine’s Abbey, and it became solely the domain of the school.
St Augustine's College closed permanently in July 2020 due to financial difficulties. The site has since been sold for redevelopment. The St Augustine's Abbey church remains under the care of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Southwark.
