Splendid China (Florida)

Splendid China was a Chinese theme park located in Kissimmee, Florida, operating from 1993 to 2003. The park featured meticulously crafted miniature replicas of famous Chinese landmarks, including the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, and the Leshan Giant Buddha. Covering 76 acres, Splendid China aimed to showcase Chinese culture and history to American audiences through these detailed reproductions and live performances.

The park was a venture of the China Travel Service, a state-owned enterprise of the People's Republic of China. Its opening was met with both anticipation and controversy. Supporters believed it would promote cultural understanding and tourism. However, critics raised concerns about the park's association with the Chinese government and the potential whitewashing of human rights issues. Protests occurred outside the park during its operation.

Economically, Splendid China struggled to attract sufficient attendance to remain viable. Despite initial investment and ongoing attempts to revitalize the park with new attractions and marketing strategies, it ultimately closed its doors in December 2003. The site remained abandoned for several years before being redeveloped.
