Sonsierra
Sonsierra is a sub-region within the Rioja DOCa (Denominación de Origen Calificada) wine region of Spain. Situated on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains, primarily in the province of Álava, it lies within the Rioja Alavesa zone. The name literally translates to "under the Sierra" or "below the mountains."
The Sonsierra is characterized by its unique microclimate and topography. The Sierra de Cantabria provides protection from the harsh Atlantic weather, creating a more Mediterranean-like climate with warmer temperatures and less rainfall than other parts of Rioja Alavesa. The soils are typically calcareous clay, which, combined with the climate, contributes to the production of high-quality Tempranillo grapes, the predominant varietal in Rioja wines.
Wines from the Sonsierra are often characterized by their structure, elegance, and aging potential. They are generally considered to be among the finest wines produced in Rioja, known for their concentration of flavors and balanced acidity. The region is home to numerous renowned wineries and vineyards.
The Sonsierra also boasts a rich cultural heritage, with historical villages and landmarks scattered throughout the landscape, reflecting its long history of viticulture and winemaking.
