Sokol (camera)

The "Sokol" was a series of Soviet-era 35mm rangefinder cameras manufactured by the LOMO (Leningrad Optical Mechanical Association) factory. Production began in the mid-1960s and continued for several years.

Features:

Sokol cameras are characterized by their automatic exposure system. They typically featured a selenium light meter coupled to the aperture and shutter speed, allowing for automated exposure control. The cameras also included a coupled rangefinder for focusing. A distinctive design element was the large selenium cell window on the front of the camera.

Models:

The Sokol camera line consisted of several variations and improvements. Notable models included the original Sokol and the Sokol-2. Later models often featured refinements to the automatic exposure system, lens, or overall build quality.

Legacy:

While not considered high-end cameras compared to Western counterparts, Sokol cameras were popular in the Soviet Union due to their affordability and ease of use, particularly for amateur photographers. They are now considered collectible items. The image quality of Sokol cameras can vary depending on the condition of the camera and the quality of the lens, but they are generally capable of producing acceptable results.
