Shirui

Shirui refers to Lilium mackliniae, a species of lily endemic to the Shirui peak and surrounding areas of Ukhrul district, Manipur, India. It is locally known as Shirui Lily or Shirui Lily flower.

Description: Lilium mackliniae is a bulbous perennial plant. It is characterized by its drooping, bell-shaped flowers which are usually pale pink or white, sometimes with a tinge of purple. The flowers typically appear during the monsoon season, from May to June. The plant can grow to a height of approximately 1-3 feet.

Habitat and Distribution: The Shirui Lily is found exclusively on the Shirui Kashong Peak in Manipur, India, growing at an altitude of around 8,500 feet above sea level. Its restricted distribution makes it a rare and endangered species. The specific microclimate of the peak, including high rainfall and acidic soil, contributes to its unique habitat.

Conservation Status: Due to its limited distribution and threats such as habitat destruction and illegal collection, the Shirui Lily is considered endangered. Conservation efforts are underway to protect the species and its habitat, including habitat restoration and awareness programs.

Cultural Significance: The Shirui Lily holds significant cultural importance for the Tangkhul Naga community of Manipur. It is associated with local folklore and is considered a symbol of beauty and purity. The Shirui Lily flower is also the state flower of Manipur.
