Shihan (newspaper)

Shihan was a Chinese-language newspaper published in Taiwan from 1948 to 1998. It was known for its focus on educational issues and its commitment to intellectual discourse. Shihan, meaning "Teacher's Model" or "Teacher's Example," reflected the paper's initial intended readership and its dedication to promoting excellence in education.

The newspaper was originally founded by the Taiwan Provincial Normal College (later renamed National Taiwan Normal University). It served as a platform for educators, scholars, and intellectuals to share their perspectives on a wide range of topics, including pedagogy, curriculum development, social issues, and cultural trends.

Over its five decades of publication, Shihan played a significant role in shaping educational policy and fostering intellectual debate in Taiwan. While initially catering to teachers and educational professionals, its readership expanded to include a broader audience interested in informed commentary and insightful analysis.

The newspaper ceased publication in 1998 due to financial difficulties and changing media landscape. Its historical archives, however, remain a valuable resource for researchers studying the development of education and intellectual thought in Taiwan during the latter half of the 20th century. Shihan is remembered as a significant voice in the Taiwanese media landscape, particularly for its contributions to educational discourse and intellectual exchange.
