Founded in 1996, the company built and operated an extensive fiber network across the United States and Europe, offering services such as Internet access, wavelength services, and colocation.

AboveNet focused on serving enterprise customers, particularly those in the media, finance, and technology sectors, requiring reliable and high-capacity network solutions. Its network was designed for low-latency performance, making it attractive for applications requiring real-time data transmission.

In 2012, Zayo Group acquired AboveNet in a transaction that significantly expanded Zayo's fiber footprint and service offerings. Following the acquisition, the AboveNet brand was discontinued, and its assets and operations were integrated into Zayo Group's existing business. The acquisition strengthened Zayo's position as a leading provider of bandwidth infrastructure in North America and Europe.
