Sherlock Holmes (1967 TV series)

Sherlock Holmes is a British television series that aired in 1967–1968, starring Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Stock as Dr. John Watson. Produced by the BBC, it adapts six Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The series is notable for its faithfulness to the original stories, with Cushing's portrayal of Holmes considered by many to be one of the closest to Doyle's written character. Nigel Stock's Watson is also regarded as a strong interpretation, being intelligent and capable, rather than the bumbling sidekick sometimes depicted in other adaptations.

The six episodes produced were based on the following stories:

  • "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (adapted as a two-part episode)
  • "The Sign of Four"
  • "The Valley of Fear"
  • "The Boscombe Valley Mystery"
  • "The Study in Scarlet"
  • "The Second Stain"

Despite its critical acclaim and adherence to the source material, the series is largely incomplete. Only "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and a portion of "The Second Stain" still exist in their entirety. The other episodes are lost due to the BBC's wiping policy of the time, with only audio recordings and still photographs surviving. The existing episodes have been released on DVD, allowing viewers to experience Cushing and Stock's take on the iconic detective duo.
