She (1916 film)
She is a 1916 American silent fantasy adventure film directed by Will Barker and Horace Lisle Lucoque, based on the 1887 novel She: A History of Adventure by H. Rider Haggard. It was one of the earliest film adaptations of Haggard's popular novel. The story follows Leo Vincey and his guardian, Horace Holly, as they journey to a remote African kingdom in search of a mysterious immortal queen known as "She," who believes Leo is the reincarnation of her long-lost lover. The film is notable for its elaborate sets and costumes, and for being a very early example of the "lost world" genre in cinema. While the film was popular at the time, no complete print is known to survive, and it is now considered a lost film. Fragments and stills remain, providing some insight into its visual style and narrative. It is distinct from other film adaptations of the novel, including a 1911 version and subsequent versions made in 1925, 1935, and 1965.
