Secret Agent X-9 (1945 serial)
Secret Agent X-9 (1945 serial) is a 13-chapter film serial released by Universal Pictures. It is the second Universal serial to be based on the comic strip Secret Agent X-9, the first being the 1939 version starring Scott Kolby.
This 1945 adaptation stars Lloyd Bridges as Phil Corrigan, the Secret Agent X-9. The plot revolves around X-9's efforts to recover a stolen Japanese code that could give the enemy an advantage during World War II. He faces a variety of dangers and enemies in his pursuit of the code, including enemy agents and treacherous collaborators.
The serial follows the typical cliffhanger format of the era, with each chapter ending on a perilous situation for the hero. Notable co-stars include Keye Luke, playing a sympathetic Chinese agent, and Victoria Horne. The storyline features a blend of espionage, action, and suspense, typical of wartime adventure serials. Like many serials of the time, it employed practical effects and stunt work to create excitement and suspense. While it is not considered one of Universal's most prestigious serials, it provides a representative example of the genre during the mid-1940s.
